Legacy Handover

Questions and answers

What is Legacy Handover?

A free, open-source check-in and hand-over tool. You check in with a tap. If you go quiet, people you invited are asked to check on you, then two trusted contacts are asked to confirm, and after a cancel window the folders you prepared are shared with the people you chose. It runs entirely in your own Google account.

Where is my data?

Only in your own Google Sheet and Google Drive. These websites store nothing: no database, no analytics, no cookies, no forms. The script runs as you, in your account, and alerts go out from your own Gmail and your own Telegram bot.

Who can see my notes and files?

Only you, until a release. Then each recipient can see only the folder you prepared for them, plus the “For everyone” folder. Notes locked with a passphrase are encrypted in your browser: nobody can read them without the passphrase, including us.

What happens if I forget to check in?

You get reminders first, by email and Telegram. With the default timings, after 7 days of silence your circle is asked to check on you; after 90 days your two trusted contacts are asked to confirm; if both confirm, a 30-day cancel window starts, and you are reminded every day. Only after that are folders shared. You can change every number in Settings.

How do I cancel a release?

Check in. Any check-in, from any channel, at any point before the release, returns everything to day 0 and tells everyone who was alerted that it was a false alarm.

What do my contacts see?

An invite from your own email address, asking if they would take part. They receive nothing else until they accept, and they can leave at any time from the same link. Buttons in emails open a page first and only act when pressed, so mail scanners cannot trigger anything.

Is this a legal document or legal advice?

No. It is a personal tool, with no guarantee of delivery, provided as-is under the MIT licence. It does not verify anything about anyone and asks for no certificates. If you need a legal document, speak to a professional.

What does it cost?

Nothing. It uses only free Google features and, if you want it, a free Telegram bot. There is no payment anywhere and no card is ever asked for.

Are there limits?
  • Email: a free Gmail account can send about 100 messages a day. The tool stops at 80 and notes the rest in the Log.
  • Files added in the dashboard: 25 MB each. For anything bigger, add it with the Google Drive app straight into the folder.
  • Files sent through Telegram: 20 MB each, a Telegram limit.
Google says “This app isn’t verified”.

That is expected. The script is your own copy in your own account, so Google has not reviewed it and we have no access to it. Choose Advanced, then Go to the app, then Allow. The setup guide explains each permission, and a short story explains the warning.

My contact did not get the invite.

First ask them to look in spam and promotions. Invites from a brand-new sender often land there. If it is not there, use “Send invite again” in the People tab: it sends a fresh link and switches off the old one.

I lost the passphrase for a locked note.

It cannot be recovered. The passphrase never leaves the browser, so nobody, including us, can open the note without it. Keep it somewhere the recipient can get it, and give them a hint in the People tab.

Test mode did nothing.

In test mode a day is a minute and the schedule runs every minute. Give it two or three minutes without touching anything, and check your spam folder. The menu item “Check my setup” shows when the schedule last ran.

How do I stop everything?

Open Apps Script from your Sheet, choose Triggers, and delete the trigger. Or delete the Sheet. Nothing keeps running anywhere else, because nothing runs anywhere else. Folders in your Drive stay until you delete them.

Does my copy update itself?

No. Your copy is yours and never changes by itself. Update instructions are published with each release.

Still stuck? The code is open source, and the privacy page says exactly what is and is not collected: we collect nothing.
